Unbeaten Herbert leads Rugby F to 2-a-side success

Leamington & District’s Autumn 2-a-side League concluded in December, with Rugby F, in the guise of Niall Herbert, Martyn and Paul Lilley, securing the title on the back of Herbert’s 100 per cent record.

FISCC (Mark Jones, Mark Kingham, Brian Marston and George Mudie) were runners-up, while Rugby G will drop down to the B Division in spring.

The B title went to Free Church J (Timmy Cooper, Jack Leggatt and David Marguerie) and they will be joined in Division A by Free Church K (Matthew Flood, Anita Whitehouse and Estyn Williams). Timmy Cooper won the averages with a 100 per cent record. St Georges G drop down to C Division.

If Free Church monopolised the B Division, Eathorpe did the same in Division C. The D team of Jack Englert, George McGowan and Sam Rose were champions and the E side of Michael and Will Bourner and Mark Hancock also gained promotion. George McGowan took the averages, without dropping a game. Potters Green B have dropped out so there will be no relegation.

Snitterfield D were worthy winners of Division D thanks to the fine form of Henry Lu, Peter Vale-Humphries and Alastair Weir. Free Church O, with a late surge, snatched second spot through Callum Guest and Sam Wiggins, while third-placed Free Church N will also be promoted.

Dave Massie of Rugby won six out of six but will probably be deemed to have played insufficient games for the averages prize, which should go to Henry Lu with 93 per cent. No team will be relegated.

In Division E, Free Church Q (James Foster, Matthew Scott and Jay Virdi) took the title with Free Church R (Lee Dorning, Joe Hunt and Jeremy Knott) also gaining promotion. Jay Virdi and Free Church S’s Dudley Turner both boast identical 100 per cent records.

A new team, Free Church U, will contest the E Division in the spring competition.

In the 3-a-side League, ninth- placed St Georges A defeated second- placed Rugby A 6-4 despite having only two players. Earl Sweeney had an impressive hat-trick and took the doubles with Mike Bishop, who won twice. In addition to the three conceded set, Elson Costa notched one.

Fielding a completely change side, Rugby A bounced back to form with a 10-0 demolition of bottom side St Georges D, Jesse Kendrick-Hill, Matthew Outhwaite and Adrian Pilgrim the men in form.

Fourth-placed WCC B upheld the form book when trouncing tenth- placed Colebridge B 8-2.

Simon Griew took his three and Nilton Green and Martin Hunter added two each. Council also bagged the doubles with Mike Rinnhofer and John Taylor replying.

In Division Four, Rugby E slammed Free Church H 10-0, Billy Kyle, Anshul Satsangi and Joe Sheen giving no quarter.

Eathorpe B overcame Free Church X 7-3 despite a treble from Church’s Lincoln Liburd. Fengliang Bai, Paul Deavall and Michael Rossington nailed the other points.

The next Free Church tournament is on Saturday January 22.
