Smith took full advantage of the warm water temperature at Bosworth Water Trust to clock an impressive 50min 26sec for the 3,800m course.

Kirsten Baddick won the women’s event in equally fine style, completing four-and-a-half laps of the scenic venue in an excellent 51:57, which was also a course record.

Although the 43-strong field enjoyed much more temperate conditions than those experienced in the previous event last September, they were forced to battle through seaweed and avoid the attentions of a battalion of curious ducks and swans, not to mention some slightly baffled anglers.

Joseph Bloomer and Georgia Lindsay won the children’s 200m event, while Chris Ryall and Olivia Tatton posted new club records in winning the men’s 800m and ladies’ 400m.

Another open water event takes place in September.
