Sehmi famous but fully focused

As one of the faces of ParalympicsGB, Mandip Sehmi has been a TV constant in the build-up to London 2012.

However, the Leamington-born wheelchair rugby player, who now lives in Warwick, says his increased media profile will not distract him from his ultimate goal of winning a medal.

“It’s been a really big honour for me to be involved to this scale,” said Sehmi. “I’ve tried to embrace it and I’ve not thought about the pressure situation. It’s the biggest Games of our lives and I’m just trying to take it in my stride.”

Great Britain have suffered two successive fourth-placed finishes but Sehmi believes a medal is definitely within their grasp, especially with the benefit of a partisan home support.

“We’re in a good place. The squad is working hard and has a lot of young talent.

“This has been four years in the making.

“We’ve gone with a different approach and I firmly believe we’re in the mix for medals, especially with the home crowd on our side.”

One result of the increased media exposure has been a dramatic rise in Sehmi’s Twitter followers, one thing the 31-year-old admits he is struggling to cope with.

“It’s unbelievable. It’s been crazy with all the messages of support.

“I don’t have time to reply to everybody and I’m going to have to start stepping back from it over the next two days to get myself focused.”
