Rare Harry try adds gloss to Leamington's afternoon

The visitors spurned a penalty attempt before Leamington opened the scoring with a three-pointer of their own courtesy of Will Fievet.

With the pattern of play still being formulated, Old Eds took the lead with a converted try following a lineout catch and drive.

The home side’s reaction was quick and decisive. Toby Bruce fielded a high clearance kick and set off on a direct run which resulted in the visitors conceding a penalty. A Leamington lineout ensued and when Craig Smith took a clean catch, his forwards gathered around him to set up an unstoppable drive to the visitors’ line, Danny Phillips getting the final touch.

This slender lead was soon added to by a Fievet penalty and as the half drew to a close, Leamington were starting to impose themselves.

Leamington quickly got to the pace of the game after the break and scored a delicious try.

Alex Carroll got his forwards working up the wing and was able to get Ed Boxall away with a neat pass.

The big centre punched a hole in the visitors’ defence and when Carroll took over again, he sent out a raking pass to winger Ryan Byrne who raced over in the corner. Fievet was just off target with the difficult conversion attempt.

From the kick-off, Gareth Shuttleworth took possession and found Boxall on the cutest of angled runs which took everybody by surprise, enabling the centre to make some 50 yards. Danny Ruyssevelt carried on the move and when Old Ed’s conceded another penalty, Leamington opted for the lineout. Craig Smith once again claimed possession and allowed his pack to drive him upfield. The pace of the drive was far too intense for the visitors and as the try line came into view, Harry got the final, important touchdown for his first try since 2011.

Toby Bruce added to the celebrations with a neat conversion and not even a consolation drop goal from Old Eds was going to spoil the hosts’ day.
