How to make sure you never lose those treasured moments

THE value of preserving precious family photographs, slides and negatives will be demonstrated at St John’s House Museum in Warwick next Saturday (April 21).

The museum - which on its upper floor houses the archives of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (Royal Warwickshire) - has a huge collection of artefacts and items to view free of charge.

Upstairs you can even press a button and hear a recording of Field Marshall Montgomery addressing the troops before the decisive battle of El Alamein.

Digital preserving company, Save Photo, has just completed the mammoth job of scanning the regiment’s entire photographic archive, identifying many long forgotten prints along the way.

Now the compahy is inviting members of the public to take in their own family snaps to get a better idea of how best to save them for posterity.

Museum curator Stephanie Bennett was particularly pleased to have permanently preserved this picture of Bobby, the regimental mascot, seen here showing a particular affection for a young fusilier.

The Indian Blackbuck antelope always accompanies the troops on ceremonial parades and is the latest in a long line of well-groomed mascots.

Lizzie Davies, a spokeswoman for Save Photo, said: “Our Open Day on April 21 is completely free of charge although donations to the museum are always appreciated.

“After digitalising all the Fusiliers’ prints we have become increasingly aware of the importance of this process for the preservation, restoration and sharing of family images as well.”
