McGreavy bronze is sign of progress

Leamington hurdler Sara McGreavy showed signs of a return to form by winning bronze at the England AAA championships at the weekend.

Following two good European Permit runs in Italy and France recently, the 28-year-old produced consecutive season’s bests in the heats and final in blustery conditions at the Bedford International Athletics Stadium.

McGreavy’s time of 13.56sec saw her qualify for the final in second behind fastest qualifier Angelita Broadbelt-Blake (13.27sec).

In the final, the Leamington-based athlete led at the first hurdle. However, American Broadbelt-Blake had moved clear by the third, leaving McGreavy and Bath’s Ashley Helsby to contest the silver medal position.

The pair were neck and neck up to the ninth hurdle but a mistake by McGreavy, which saw her catch her trail leg on the top of the hurdle, cost her momentum and allowed Helsby to take second in 13.25sec.

Broadbelt-Blake won the event in 13.12sec, with McGreavy third in a season’s best 13.39sec.

McGreavy is now hoping to build on her performance at the Birmingham Games at the Alexander Stadium this weekend.

“I am now almost back to full fitness and am training well,” she said. “I now need a few hard races to get race-fit for the rest of the season.”
