Hundal impresses in New York Marathon

After going through the first 10k in 37:49, Hundal maintained his 6:07-minute miling pace to pass the ten-mile mark in 61:09.

On reaching the Queens district and the half-way point, the clock showed 80:46, which was just outside the Leamington runner’s personal best for a half-marathon.

Hundal completed his second ten miles in 65:22, but his strong early pace began to tell on the three-mile stretch along 5th Avenue and twinges of cramp forced him to moderate his pace to around seven-minute miling.

A final effort from the 26-mile mark saw him cross the line in 2:50:54, his second best time on a course which has defeated many of the world’s leading athletes.

Hundal was also 27th in his age group (men 45-49) and the first UK athlete in his category to finish.

After the race, he said: “What a great race to do - once you get to the start.

“I really went for it. The last six were very tough, but I’m really pleased with my time.”
