Harry try proves small consolation

Leamington suffered their second successive Midlands One West defeat, with newly promoted Worcester looking a strong bet to gain promotion at the first attempt.

The visitors started in fluent fashion and were rewarded with a seventh-minute try. Further pressure continued to be exerted by Worcester and it took some robust tackling from Northover, Dudley and Williams to keep the Spa line in tact.

With 25 minutes on the clock, Worcester increased their lead with another unconverted try and they heaped further misery on the home side with a breakaway try just as Spa seemed to be making inroads.

Buoyed by their 17-point lead, the visitors hit Spa with immediate pressure after the break and Spa scrum-half Patrick Northover put in two successive tackles to halt attacks.

However, from the resulting scrum, Worcester stole the ball and raced down the blindside to score.

Spa’s afternoon got even worse when Worcester claimed the ball from the restart, allowing right wing Kieron Morris to race through to score under the posts.

Despite the deficit, Spa continued to probe away, with Tom Williams, playing his first game since breaking his leg last season, linked expertly with fellow centre Alex Carroll and fly-half Simon Dudley.

Another try for Worcester made it 34-0 before Spa were finally rewarded for their industry.

Alex Carroll and Tom Williams were at the breakdown following a fine run from Dudley and the duo laid the platform for lock Simon Harry to crash over between the posts. Carroll added the conversion.
