Half Crown are crowned champions again

Half Crown Stockton secured the West Midlands Inter-Club Challenge for a fifth successive year after a dramatic conclusion at Staunton-on-Wye, Hereford.

Three pairs from each of the eight teams played in a round-robin format and after five rounds, Half Crown had lost just three of their 14 games to lead the way.

However, in round six they lost all three games to Coventry which allowed Whitnash and Marches to move into first and second, respectively.

When Marches took two games from Whitnash in the final round, this put them at the head of proceedings despite Half Crown winning their first two games against Worcester.

Another win by Marches would have clinched the title, but a strong effort from Nouri Beladaci and Maurice Rendall for Whitnash held off Bill Wood and Molly Greatorix to set up a compelling final game in which Half Crown’s Rich Powell and Philippe Bonnet met the Worcester pair of Philippe Gilli and Craig Maycroft to win the title.

With the Half Crown duo 10-5 down, the title looked to be going to The Marches.

However, a late rally from Powell and Bonnet secured a narrow victory and a fifth successive title for Half Crown.
