Gould leads from the front as Runners claim a top-six finish at Cheltenham

A good turnout from Kenilworth Runners was rewarded with two top-20 finishers at the third race of the Gloucester League Cross Country at Pittville Park in Cheltenham.

The race consisted of two laps for the ladies (6k) and three laps for the men (9.1k), including a stream crossing on each lap.

There was a problem in the senior men’s race where many runners were given official times which were up to two minutes slower than the time on the runners’ own watches.

The league is still trying to ascertain what happened so the times mentioned are the ‘official’ times.

Eighteen men and seven ladies made the 50-mile round trip for Kenilworth, with Phil Gould (13th in 32:54) and Peter Hawkins (16th in 33:25) helping the men’s A team to finish sixth on the day.

Kenilworth’s B team finished 13th and the C team 24th, while the veterans were fifth.

Eoin O’Flynn was the first Leamington C&AC runner home in 58th place with a time of 36:34, followed by Craig Bower (64th in 36:48) and Mike Denney (94th in 38:25).

The scoring team was completed by Nick Tawney (100th in 38.39), Steve Roberts (129th in 40:12) and Noel Butler (185th in 45:09).

Graham Roberts was 186th (45:17) and Rupe Chalal 209th (51:02).

The team finished 14th and the masters were seventh.

Graham Rush of Cheltenham won the race in 30:28.

In the ladies’ race, Kenilworth A finished 11th, with their B team 21st.

Danielle Mohacsi (27:56)was first counter for Kenilworth, followed by Stef Lunn(28:52) and Rebecca Smith (29:27).

Only two senior C&AC ladies ran. Angela Chalal was 18th (3rd V40) in 26:15 while Susie Tawney’s time of 26:32 gave her 21st place and first in her age category.

Leamington C&AC’s junior boys continued their fine form to keep themselves in contention for end-of-season team medals.

The under-17 men were the first team home, led by Matthew Woodhouse in eighth place in a time of 22:25.

The team was completed by Freddie Loveday (9th in 22:27) and Adam West (10th in 23:12)

In the under-15 boys’ race, the A team were second and the B team fifth.

Kieran Chalal was second in 20:04, followed by Alex Ibbs (4th in 20:39) and Greg West (8th in 21:12).

Toby Loveday (21;54) was first home for the B team in 14th with the team completed by Tim Virr (18th in 23:03) and Dominic Priest (19th in 23:45).

Ben Illesley was 20th in 25:29

The under-13 boys came third, led by Cian McIntyre, who was sixth in 10:28.

He was followed by Will Eadon (11th in 10:51), Daniel Chalal (21st in 11:41) and Sebastian Priest (28th in 12:25).
