Grinham glory for Leggitt family at a damp Kenilworth

The Grinham Greensome competition proved a family affair at Kenilworth Golf Club last Saturday.

Father and son, Charles and James Leggitt, mastered the wet conditions to run out winners with a splendid 43 points.

Chris Peake and Leo Lewis finished runners-up with 42 points, while Andy Heath and Stewart Freeman claimed third place by virtue of a better back nine than Mark Gardner and Simon Bisp after both pairs scored 41 points.

Meanwhile, Robin Koolhoven and Sue Draper won the Mixed Flag competition at Crewe Lane.

They lifted the Jack Pilbin Trophy by carrying the flag to 14 feet from the 18th pin.

Two other pairs reached the 18th green, with runners-up John and Sue Wolfe getting to within 18 feet of the pin, while Jane and Roger Adams finished 35 feet away to claim third place.

Two old competitions were played in tandem at Warwick Golf Club on Sunday.

Steve Slack just edged out Ian Scandrett to win the Baker Trophy, which was put up by former captain Eddy Baker in 1976.

Steve carded 83, nett 69, while Ian came home in nett 70.

In the RGF, which was presented to the club by Dick Ferry in 1978, Pete Hall defied the wind and rain to win with nett 72.

Hall’s nearest challenger was Chris Lincoln (75).

The previous Friday, Warwick held its annual Autumn Cup competition at Staverton Park Golf Club.

In blustery conditions, Ian Cardin won it with a solid score of 36 points, just one point better than second-placed Rob Buckingham.

Stoneleigh Deer Park’s men’s stableford attracted a field of more than 90, with Norman Moorhead’s 41 points giving him victory in Division One.

Division One: 1, Norman Moorhead (41pts); 2, Carl Stanford (40pts); 3, Matt Pugh (38pts, on countback). Division Two: 1, Malcolm Sparrow (43pts, on countback); 2, Graham Pidgeon (43pts); 3, Jon Howe (42pts, on countback).Division Three: Jan Grzegorczyk (41pts); 2, Bill Griffin (35 pts); 3, John Hynes (34pts).

Ladies Final Medal: 1, Shirley Proctor (nett 71); 2, Kully Wain (nett 74); 3, Jenny Arnold (nett 82).

Jane Baines and Brenda Sparrow were the winners of Stoneleigh ladies’ first-ever round-robin matchplay competition.

The duo, who had been competing against eight other pairs in the six-month long competition, beat Ann Whitehouse and Kully Wain on the 16th hole to clinch the final.

Stoneleigh’s Stags Medal, which was played over two days, was won by Mick Lloyd.

Lloyd took the prize on countback after finishing on nett 66 alongside Barry Nutter, who took the over-70s’ prize.

Tom Wilding was two shots back in third.
