GOLF: Victorian costume for 125th anniversary game

Rugby Golf Club, founded in 1891, recently continued its 125th year anniversary celebrations with a match against Atherstone Golf Club at the Clifton Road course.

Rugby has long standing and very close ties with its near neighbour. In fact, Atherstone’s first ever match, to mark its own creation, was a friendly encounter with Rugby way back in 1894. This fixture is believed to be the longest running club match in the history of golf. With more than a nod to that history, Rugby’s team turned out in late Victorian costume, many complete with plus fours and tweeds in the balmy August sunshine.

In a tight match the home side triumphed 4-2. Rugby’s Captain Chris Moran raised a toast to Atherstone GC and the camaraderie between the two clubs. In reply Atherstone’s captain Bob Walsh paid tribute to Rugby GC and the historic bond between the two sets of members.

In a busy programme for the day there was also a mixed match alongside the men’s fixture, with Rugby President, Adrian Evans’ team earning a closely fought (4-4) halved match.

The celebrations continued into the late evening with much banter and socialising with the competitors, members and friends of both clubs enjoying a barbecue and music on a hugely enjoyable day for both historic clubs. Here’s to the next 125 years!
