Leamington exit Senior Cup at the hands of Bedworth

After a delayed kick-off due to an electrical problem the visitors scored towards the end of each half to secure their first win over Leamington in any competition for 30 years.

Paul Holleran again made changes from the side that had won at King’s Lynn, using the evening to try out some of his squad in different positions while resting others.

Lee Chilton struck the first effort on goal as he charged through on the right, but Greenbacks keeper Denham Hinds got down well to save.

Bedworth broke forward from a Leamington throw deep in their own half and Brakes contrived to lose possession again on the edge of their own penalty area, allowing David Blenkinsopp to drive in a shot that was held by Tony Breeden.

Chilton then set up Rob Ogleby for a low drive which was held by Hinds before the visitors swept into the lead two minutes before the break. Daniel Creaney ended a quick counter attack with a shot which struck the post, but he was afforded far too much time and space to latch on to the loose ball which he crashed into the roof of the net.

Leamington made the perfect start to the second half, levelling three minutes in.

Will Green was chopped down inside the penalty area by Bedworth substitute Nathan Harrison. Brakes skipper Breeden was quick to spot the ball and, although Hinds guessed the right way, he was beaten as the ball was fired powerfully into the bottom corner.

Ogleby registered a contender for miss of the season when he somehow screwed Chilton’s cross over the bar from six yards and later combined with Green on the edge of the box to set up Taundry for a shot that flew over.

Though Leamington’s general play was good, they were lacking the ideas know-how to break down their visitors, who showed the quality needed when their opening came three minutes from time, Harry Walker-Donovan neatly turning in a left-wing cross.

Aron Wint almost added a third when he beat Jamie Tank on the left but fired over the bar, while Green blasted Leamington’s last opportunity wide after a smart turn on the edge of the box.
