Keeper headache as Vaughan makes Harriers switch

The former Evesham United and Romulus gloveman played twice for Harriers on non-contract terms last season.

The 30-year-old follows Tony Breeden in taking the direct route from the New Windmill to Aggborough and Brakes boss Paul Holleran, speaking from his holiday in the Isle of Wight, said the club could not stand in his way.

“Kidderminster got in touch with us towards the end of last week asking for permission to speak to Nathan about a transfer,” said Holleran.

“He’s done great for us, but Nathan feels that he’s let so many years pass him by.

“Playing at Leamington last season made him realise what he might have had and at 30 he sees it as his last chance to go into full-time football.

“We respect that and we’d like to wish him all the best.”

For his part, Kidderminster boss Steve Burr was delighted to have tied up the deal, with Vaughan expected to vie with Danny Lewis for the number one jersey

“We’re quite fortunate to have someone with Nathan’s experienced,” said Burr.

“He is quite similar to Tony Breeden in the sense that he has played an awful lot of games at non-league level.

“We have taken a look at a number of goalkeepers in pre-season but none of them really gave us the feeling that they’d push Danny Lewis in the way we’d like, whether they were too young or perhaps some other reason.

“Nathan is someone we feel who will come in and do that so we’re glad to have agreed a deal to bring him in.”

With just over two weeks to go to Brakes’ season-opener at Bedford, Holleran admitted it was a problem he could well do without.

However, while he admitted Saturday’s trip to Nuneaton may come too soon, he was hopeful of having a new number one in place for the following Saturday’s home friendly with Worcester City.

“From my point of view the timing isn’t ideal,” he said.

“If it had come at the end of the season we had players in mind.

“But now the players are tied up.

“We do have one or two things happening and we’ll see how it develops.”

Brakes will have a quick reunion with Vaughan when Kidderminster come to the New Windmill on Tuesday evening for a friendly which formed part of the deal.

The night had originally been left free in the hope of arranging a warm-up game against Leicester City.

 Brakes have been drawn away at Warwickshire rivals Rugby Town in the first round of the Southern League Cup, sponsored by Red Insure.

The tie is likely to be played around the week commencing October 15.
