Folkard’s Field of dreams

Naomi Folkard bounced back from her Olympic disappointment to pick up a gold and a bronze at the World Field Archery Championships in Val D’Isere, France.

Folkard, who suffered a last-32 exit at Lord’s, was among 250 archers taking part in the event, which featured all three disciplines - recurve, compound and barebow - in a stunning location on the lower slopes of the Alps.

In the ranking competition, the recurve archer shot consistently well to finish fourth behind Sophie Dodemont (France), Jessica Tomasi (Italy) and Marina Szendey (France).

As the highest-placed Great Britain lady, this automatically qualified Folkard for the team competition alongside Tracey Anderson (compound) and Lizzy Rees (barebow).

Ranked fifth, the Great Britain team performed above themselves to beat Sweden (98-94) and the United States to set up a final meeting with the host nation.

The British trio opened up a four-point lead after the first end and, despite France reducing their advantage to two after the second end, Great Britain held on to win 50-46 and take the gold.

The Leamington archer followed up by taking a bronze in the individuals.

Ranked third after the first elimination round, Folkard secured her place in the knockout stage with a fourth place in the second elimination round.

She found the in-form Elena Richter (Germany) too good in her semi-final, slipping to a 55-51 defeat, but recovered to clinch the bronze medal match against home favourite Szendey (55-51).
