In the quarter-finals they overcame Ukraine 6-2 to set up a semi-final match against eventual gold medallists USA.

The scores were tied after four sets with the British pair losing the tie-break.

In their bronze medal match, Folkard and Godfrey took advantage of a poor start from Chinese Taipei pair Shih-Cheng Peng and Shu Chi Yuan, seizing a 2-0 lead after the first set.

After the second set was shared, the British pair gained a further two points in the third set to wrap up a 5-1 win and the bronze medal.

USA beat Mexico 6-0 to win gold, but Folkard and Godfrey had the satisfaction of producing the highest score of all the medallists.

In the individual event, after gaining a bye in the first round, Folkard beat Chia-En Lin (Chinese Taipei) 6-4, but then lost 6-0 to Mexico’s Alejandr Valencia.

Earlier in the month Folkard attended an international training camp in Antalya, Turkey, from which she returned with bronze medals from both the individual and ladies team events.
