Folkard homing in on World Cup gold

After winning the national championship in her home town, Naomi Folkard has set her sights on World glory in Edinburgh this weekend.

Folkard won the gold medal in the women’s recurve event at the Archery GB National Series Grand Final held at Jephson Gardens.

It is the first time she has won the title after taking the silver medal last year.

“I am absolutely delighted to win this title, because it means you have to shoot consistently well in five qualifying tournaments around the country during the summer, and then the Grand Final itself,” said Folkard.

“To do it in front of friends and family here in Leamington makes it even more special, and Jephson Gardens has proved a wonderful venue.

“It has been lovely to see so many people come along and enjoy the day, and it has been nice to put archery in front of the passers-by who have stopped off to take a look.”

Folkard beat GB international colleague Charlotte Burgess in a closely fought final after a comprehensive semi-final victory over Sam Meadows. Now she he is focusing her attention on the FITA World Cup Grand Final in Edinburgh which kicks off tomorrow.

She said: “I’m thrilled to have qualified for the World Cup and I am really excited about lining up alongside seven other archers from around the world, competing for the gold medal.

“It is going to be really tough, but I will be giving it my best, and winning the National Series has certainly set me up well for Edinburgh.”

After the World Cup, Folkard will be heading to India for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. It is the first time archery has been part of the Commonwealth Games schedule since 1982.
