Derby rivals visit Ks for the ‘big one’

The banter has been flying since the Midlands Two West (South) fixtures were released and tomorrow Kenilworth and Leamington will battle it out in a league fixture for the first time in six years.

Two successive relegations for Kenilworth reunited the derby rivals, but despite league parity having been restored, Ks are already on their way to re-establishing their supremacy with back-to-back wins.

Leamington, in contrast, have suffered two heavy defeats to prop up the early-season table and head to the Jack Davies Memorial Ground as massive underdogs.

But despite his side’s impressive start to the season, Kenilworth assistant coach Glyn Owen knows this game is the one that matters most to the players and fans.

“I’ve been at Kenilworth since 1982 and this has always been the big one,” said Owen. “It’s one we desperately want to win.

“It’s terrible to lose to Leamington, whether it be the third team, the colts, anyone.”

A lunch for former Kenilworth players ahead of the encounter will further add to the sense of occasion.

However, Owen believes the less rarefied atmosphere of Midlands Two West has already played a part in encouraging fans down to Glasshouse Lane.

“I’ve heard people talking about three to 400 [for tomorrow’s match] and that would be great.

“After the grind of Midlands One rugby, we’re now seeing a more open grass-roots style of rugby and while there might be a few more mistakes, it’s bringing back the crowds.”

Kenilworth’s slide down the leagues saw a reinvention of the club during the close season and Owen is delighted to see it already bearing fruit.

However, he says it is important Ks maintain their high standards in a fiercely competitive division.

“It’s been fantastic to win two out of two and be looking down the table for a change.

“But while we didn’t expect relegation last year it would be foolish to take promotion or the play-offs for granted this time around.

“If you look at the teams in the league like Newbold, Kidderminster Earlsdon and Old Laurentians, these have been our foes for many years and we’re not taking anyone lightly.”

Kenilworth could contain two former Leamington players in their ranks tomorrow in Gareth Renowden and Simon Tyler and Tony Timms, director of rugby for the Moorefields side, says the familiarity between the two sides adds extra spice to the clash.

And, despite the sides’ wildly contrasting starts to their season, Timms expects the derby to be a tight, nervy encounter.

“It’s going to be fun,” said Timms. “It’s brilliant because we know each other so well.

“You can say you’re going to beat them by this and that, but if you look at it logically it’s going to be a very close game.

“I think there many only be one try between the sides.”

But whatever the result, Timms says it is the chance to renew old acquaintances over a pint which should make the day such a memorable one.

“As long as we can all have a drink in the bar after the game then that’s the main thing.

“And because I live in Kenilworth, I’ll even be able to walk home.”

 The match kicks off at 3pm, with the club bar open from noon.
