Cygnets sunk by ducklings in the battle of the bowls newcomers

Warwick Boat Club Cygnets met Royal Leamington Spa Ducklings at Victoria Park in a three-rink triples friendly, the second of what it is hoped to become an annual fixture to give experience of match play to newcomers in all positions.

Boat Club captain for the day Lorna Lee had three team members playing in a club match for the first time against a far more practised team and the inexperience showed, with Ducklings captain Jenny Wickens leading her side to a 67-25 success.

A more epxerienced Boat Club side, led by Mary Wheildon, beat Southam 50-39 in a three-rink friendly.

A morale-sapping third defeat was averted, however, in large part to a 23-7 win for McClean’s rink in the clash with Lillington.

Richard Sharp edged out Ted Rheams 18-17 and Andy McKowen tied with Adrienne Rheams, but it was McClean’s comprehensive 16-point margin which proved the difference in a 77-70 win for Staff.

Malcolm Welch (19-10) and John Henfrey were the Lillington victors.
