No need for alarm as Alam hits his second ton for Leamington

Leamington improved on recent performances in gaining a winning draw at home to fellow strugglers Brewood which lifted them off the bottom of the Birmingham League Division One.

Batting first, Leamington lost two quick wickets but this allowed Paul Best (71) to join Shabaaz Alam and they began to find Brewood’s bowling to their liking.

Continuing his recent fine form, Alam raced along at a run a ball in compiling a magnificent 147.

Leamington kicked on through Lee Hopkins (42) and Simon Magill (21*) and their innings closed on a daunting 322 - 6 with Brewood’s Morne Henneke taking three for 95.

In reply, Brewood set out to avoid defeat but Leamington kept chipping away at the visitors’ line up and two wickets each for openers Olly Williams and Tom Warner were followed by four from the excellent Grant Thornton and a single success for veteran Neil Smith.

Brewood were held together by Henneke’s 69 and Leamington were unable to claim a deserved win as Brewood finished on 235 - 9.

Leamington 2nds stopped the rot following two successive defeats by claiming a losing draw at Wolverhampton.

Battting first, the hosts made a good start against Leamington’s seam attack, adding 90 for the first wicket.

The introduction of spinners Jim Gethins and Jack Hawkes pulled things back for Leamington, as the track began to take exaggerated turn, but the Wolves batsmen played well and took tea on 236 -8 after 50 overs.

Leamington’s response started brightly through the flashing blade of Richard Swann (35) but his was the first of four quick wickets for Wolves skipper Alan Chapman who took five in total.

Leamington regrouped through Hawkes (34) and Jason Butler (54) and while victory was rarely in sight, their solid partnership ensured safety for Leamington who finished on 191 – 8.

Leaminton 3rds amassed an impressive 317-6 in 45 overs against Tamworth in the Cotswold Hills League Division One.

Opener Dave Hawkes scored a chanceless 132 and was well supported by Joe Somra (28), Mark Davison (65) and Ben Cowan (26).

In reply Tanworth were dismissed for 153 in 44 overs with Lee Credgington (4-28) the pick of Leamington’s bowlers.

Leamington 4ths made short work of Mickleton in Division Six of the Birmingham League.

Billy Hallett maintained his recent great form, passing 500 runs for the season, in making a powerful 136 not out. The wicket of James Cutts (20) was to be Mickleton’s only success, as Hallett was joined by Mark Reynolds who hit a fine unbeaten 106 as Leamington closed on 279 - 1.

Mickleton were bowled out for 129 in the 34th over thanks to early wickets for Cutts and Nathan Credgington while the unstoppable Mark Ryan took 5-31.
