‘King of spin’ Ashley Giles makes more of a mark with the bat against Kenilworth

Former England player and coach Ashley Giles finished the job on his debut for Nuneaton as Kenilworth went down to a heavy eight-wicket defeat.

Ex-Warwickshire star Giles, more famous for his spin bowling, wasn’t needed in the Nuneaton attack as Kenilworth were skittled out fora paltry 49 in the Warwickshire League Premier Division clash.

Kenilworth found conditions difficult and struggled against the pace attack of Lee McNeill and Russell Rice who bowled unchanged for 28.2 overs.

The pair took all the wickets to fall and prevented Giles from being introduced into the attack.

McNeill was rewarded with a very impressive return of 6-16 while skipper Rice claimed a tidy 4-33 from his 14 overs.

Only Chris Prophet reached double figures as his 25 made up more than half of Kenilworth’s total.

Nuneaton lost two wickets in the run chase to end on 50-2 inside 10 overs as James Taplin made an unbeaten 18 and Giles, who had earlier taken a sharp catch in the slips, finished on 12 not out while also hitting the only six of the day in the process.

Ed Ruswa (1-18) and Liam Newton (1-26) took the wickets to fall on a day Kenilworth will quickly want to forget about and move on from.

There was better news for Kenilworth 2nd in Division Two as Tom Booker and Mark Stranks led them to a 156-run success over Atherstone.

The openers batted throughout the innings as Kenilworth closed on 268-0.

Booker hit a stunning unbeaten 159, which included 21 fours and a six.

And Stranks played the supporting role as he ended on 82 not out.

Booker continued his good form as he chipped in with two sharp stumpings as Atherstone fell apart against the tight Kenilworth bowling unit, who all took wickets.

Spin duo Phil Edmonds (4-29) and Charlie Stranks (3-15) led the way as Atherstone were all out for 112 while seamers Steve Rhodes (2-23) and Theo McCann (1-15) took care of the rest.
