Police blocked the crossroads near the Clarendon Lodge Medical Practice where the air ambulance landed.

The workman was an employee of Severn Trent contractor NMCNomenca, which has been upgrading the town’s sewer system.

A Severn Trent spokeswoman said: “Our thoughts are with the employee and his family.

“Severn Trent takes the health and safety of our colleagues and our customers very seriously and we are working with the Health and Safety Executive to determine the cause of the accident.”
