Warwick wildflower upset set for council debate

The Friends of St Nicholas Park group is protesting against areas of grassland being killed ready for a wildflower meadow to be planted this year - with the areas now resembling muddy marshland unsuitable for public use.

The group is calling for areas of grassland to be reinstated and will present its petition to Warwick District Council at its next executive meeting.

Linda Bromley, chair of the volunteer group, said: “The Friends believe that these large expanses of our precious open recreational space should be preserved for the health and wellbeing of all park users.

“The areas are popular for families but the once-grassed areas have now turned to mud.

“We hope that councillors will heed our petition of almost 600 signatures and restore our green open space.”

She has also questioned the cost of the meadow - which has been placed at around £13,000 when there are “more vital projects” needed in the park including for a new fence at the play area and upgrades to the skate park.

A Warwick District Council spokesperson said: “Funds were allocated to this priority project as part of wider range of improvements.

“Further funded projects include footpath improvement and picnic benches.

“The Friends of St Nicholas Park were fully consulted with meetings held in March 2015.

“Once established the meadows will provide wild flowers for people and wildlife to enjoy.”
