Warwick post delivery ‘in a gigantic mess’

PEOPLE across Warwick aren’t getting their post on time because a new system at a town sorting office has created a huge backlog.

Worst affected has been the Woodloes estate where residents have reported that in recent weeks they are going days without any post at all, and then getting a big heap all in one go.

Woodloes resident Steve Dello runs a business from home and says delays are making life difficult.

He said: “Royal Mail is in a gigantic mess, we had no mail for four days. There is a new system in place and it is a complete mess. Woodloes is the worst affected.

“I went up to the sorting office and they are just tearing their hair out. Mail had been sat there all week, it has gone pear-shaped.

“They don’t seem to be doing anything about it. I don’t care what’s going on behind the scenes, I just want my post.

“I need bits and pieces to keep me going, I rely on it.”

Landlord of the Woodloes Tavern Rob Twigger is angry that post has become so sporadic with no explanation offered.

He said: “It’s definitely a problem, I had a weeks worth come in one day.

“I’m waiting for a few things. The brewery sent something five weeks ago and have tried sending it again and nothing has arrived.”

The problem at the sorting office in Broxell Close seems to have stemmed from the decision to change to just one delivery a day, meaning that postmen and women aren’t able to deliver everything within their shift.

County councillor Martyn Ashford said: “It is totally unacceptable, there have been a hell of a lot of problems with it.

“A lot of mail that’s going out is coming back because they can’t cope with doing it all in just the one delivery.

“There’s a build-up of stuff that is accumulating. It’s quite serious, there are things like cheques that people are waiting on.

“It’s quite worrying as we are coming up to the Christmas period and they obviously can’t cope. It isn’t the fault of the postmen, it’s the fault of the system that’s been put in place.”

There have been reports of people having delays in their post in other parts of Warwick with one Chase Meadow resident getting no post at all this week.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said that the changes are being made nationally as part of a £2 billion plan to modernise its operations, and that it was based on an agreement made between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union earlier this year.

She added: “When any such major change is implemented, some disruption is possible until the changes bed in.

“All staff at the delivery office are working hard to implement these changes with minimum disruption to service but we apologise to any customers who have experienced delays.”
