Waiting list for Warwick scouts

Warwick Sea Scout leaders say the decision by district planners to allow them to re-locate their boatyard and build a new headquarters alongside St Nicholas Park leisure centre means in future many more children will be able to join.

Assistant scout leader Neil Pitchford said the current headquarters in the park was almost 50 years old and failed to meet modern standards.

As a consequence the 200-strong membership has had to be restricted and the 2nd Sea Scouts has had an extremely long waiting list for many years.

The current base, near Charter Bridge, also hosts the district Scout Network for 18 to 25 year-olds.

When the present boatyard is moved from nearby Myton Fields it will mean the outdated headquarters can be demolished and used for storage.

There were objections by nearby residents to a boatyard, which will be surrounded by security fencing, and potential parking problems with parents dropping children off.
