Village couple goes platinum

The Cubbington Mill Care Home residents, both in their 90s, celebrated their Platinum wedding on Saturday.

They first met at a dance aged 22 and 20 respectively and because Mr Squance was in the army he had to ask for special leave to get married and was under strict orders to return to his barracks before midnight.

He said: “We didn’t have time for long courtships.”

The couple shared their wedding day with Mrs Squance’s sister and her partner .

The ceremony took place at Dewsbury in Yorkshire where Betty wore a powder blue dress with a matching hat and her sister was in turquoise.

When asked what the secret to 70 years of happy marriage was they replied “ to be trustworthy and true to each other and to give and take”, although Malcolm commented “I give and Betty takes”.

And when asked what advice they would give to a young couple starting out, Betty said “ it’s important to have your own space” and Malcolm said “it’s important to get over your arguments quickly and to have a good sense of humour”.
