As well as giving youngsters the chance to take part in competitive races and fun activities, the event marked the culmination of an Ofsted-backed ‘Kids Marathon’ schools project, during which children have completed 26 miles of running over the course of the summer term.

Martine Verweij, former world triathlon and mountain bike athlete and co-founder of Kids Run Free, said: “We hope this is the start of something really exciting, with more youngsters taking part in the future. Children need to be encouraged to regularly take part in outdoor activities - our events are designed to get kids up and running from an early age.”
