Update: accident on A46 halts traffic on M40

Emergency Services were called to the A46 between Longbridge Island at junction 15 of the M40 and the A4177 Birmingham Road after two vehicles crashed on either side of the central reservation shortly before 2pm.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service sent engines from Southam and Leamington to the scene, where a man was trapped in a vehicle on the southbound carriageway.

The Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance airlifted the man, believed to be in his 70s, to University Hospital, Coventry.

He is reported to have crashed into the central reservation after becoming unwell at the wheel. Air ambulance staff helped paramedics free the man, before putting him on a spinal stretcher and flying him to hospital.

A second car from the northbound carriageway suffered damage and a wheel from another vehicle was found near the car.

The driver, a man, was assessed by crews at the scene but appeared to be uninjured.

The A46 southbound from junctions with the A452 and A4177 to the M40 was closed completely, and one northbound lane was closed.
