Southam went back to the 1950s in Retro Revival event

ALL of the sights and sounds of the 1950s were celebrated in Southam this month.

Live rock ‘n’ roll, classic cars and motorbikes, authentic attire, and competitions were all part of the Retro Revival event.

The event - the first of its type to be held in the town - was organised by new town centre partnership Southam First.

Market Hill and High Street were buzzing with activity as stalls sold gifts jewellery, cupcakes, vintage goods, hot dogs, popcorn and 1950s makeovers and traditional games took place throughout the day.

The Sugabilly Girls sold ‘ration books’, which could be used in several shops and businesses in the town centre.

Sue Hinsley, chairman of Southam First’s marketing, tourism and events committee and a co-owner of Handbags and Gladrags in Market Hill, said: “It was fantasic, it was a great day.

“We had people dancing in the street, kids hula-hooping and everyone singing along.

“The 20 market stalls were selling out and had to restock and the vintage cars went down well with all ages.

People have come in the shop saying what a fab day it was and have asked when the next one is taking place.”

Southam First is a partnership between businesses in the town and Stratford District Council, which is aiming to improve and bring more trade to the town centre.

The partnership has organised themed Christmas markets, which will take place on the first three Saturdays in December.
