Regency dancing returns to Warwick

The Court House in Jury Street will once again open its doors to relive grand assemblies held there two hundred years ago.

The ball is being organised by the Unlocking Warwick group where volunteers aim to create a community hub to share the town’s history.

Last year their inaugural Christmas Ball in the newly restored ballroom was hugely popular, and with guests requesting a repeat performance, the event will return with live music on December 12.

The 2015 celebration will include music from Dampiers Round country band in what organiser 
Tricia Scott said she hopes will set revelry off in style.

She said: “The Court House hosted many elegant assemblies and dances in the 18th and 19th centuries, so it is great to be able to revive the tradition in the renovated ballroom.

“Regency-style dancing is great fun. You can almost feel yourself becoming more elegant as you dance.

“For anyone who’s never tried it, so long as you have a basic sense of rhythm it’s not difficult to learn the steps.”

Dance teacher Frances 
Richardson will be on hand to guide the guests through 16 period dances such as The Pleasures of the Town and The Female Saylor.

Tickets are now on sale at 19 guineas and one shilling - or £20 in today’s money, and include refreshments.
