Randolph Turpin statue gets a needed makeover

Adrian Bush, of Clearys Boxing Gym in Leamington, organised for professional statue cleaner Steve Hargreaves to carry out the work for free on Monday night.

Both men work for the company Felix Dennis and Mr Hargreaves has worked on major projects including Nelson’s Column in London.

Turpin, who died aged 37 in 1966, became World Middleweight Champion when he beat Sugar Ray Robinson in 1951 and was posthumously inducted into the boxing hall of fame in 2001.

A portrait of his older brother Dick, a former British and Commonwealth Middleweight Champion and the first black fighter to win a British title, was recently unveiled at the newly refurbished Court House in Jury Street, Warwick, and is now in situ there.

Again, Mr Bush and others at Clearys led the fundraising campaign to make it happen.
