Pupils get creative to help carve out history

The eager youngsters from Bishop’s Tachbrook school etched their name in history this week, after helping to name new roads in a Harbury Lane development.

Construction on Oakley Grove, a new housing scheme by developer, A C Lloyd has begun.

And streets now have creative and historic names thanks to the Year five pupils who helped come up with the names as part of studies in persuasive writing.

The nine and 10-year-olds were taught about using emotive language and personal pronouns - and a whole host were recommended including suggestions with royal links, trees and even the Warwickshire Bears cricket team.

Chosen names were Royal Boulevard and Majestic Way, with Royal Oak Avenue, Bluebell Way and Silver Birch Street also being considered to inclusion in the build.

Alistair Clark, Director at A C Lloyd, said: “We were really impressed with the variety and number of names put forward for the new roads, particularly those with a regal reference.

“As the site has historic links with the potato farming industry we combined the school’s royal suggestions with types of potato, and use names King Edward Drive and Lionheart Avenue -a fitting tribute to what has been before.”
