Lizzy putting in the miles to stop HS2 in its tracks

ANTI-high speed rail campaigner Lizzy Williams continued her 200-mile walk of the proposed HS2 route by visiting villages in Warwick district this week.

Miss Williams, who has made national headlines by embarking on the month-long trek, joined hundreds of people on a walk along the Kenilworth Greenway to Burton Green on Sunday.

She also walked from Stareton to Cubbington on Tuesday as part of her plan to cover the entire route from Lichfield to London.

Miss Williams, the chairman of the South Northamptonshire action group, said: “The public consultation is in the spring so please don’t think you can’t make a difference and that the government have already made a decision.

“You have to stand up and say this is a waste of money, the country cannot afford it, we don’t want it, it benefits too few and the losses affect too many.”

The Offchurch action group has organised a walk from the village to Ufton Woods on Saturday.

Action group chairman Prof Mike Geddes said: “An independent survey we have carried out shows that 90 per cent of the parish are opposed to the railway so we don’t just say lots of people are against it we actually know.”

Kenilworth and Southam MP Jeremy Wright announced on Wednesday that new draft proposals could reduce the impact the line has on Burton Green, Ladbroke and Stoneleigh.

Under the new plans, the route would be moved further away from Ladbroke and pass through a cutting rather than a viaduct.

In Burton Green the effect on the natural environment could be reduced by the route running through a tunnel and in Stoneleigh the line will be moved away from the village and through Stoneleigh Park.

Mr Wright and campaigners have spent months lobbying the government and the MP met Rail Minister Theresa Villiers in an effort to change the current preferred route.

Graham Long, chairman of the Ladbroke action group, said: “While this is very welcome news if the proposal goes ahead it does not diminish the campaign to get this wrong-headed proposal cancelled and see our taxpayer’s money spent more wisely.”
