Police give warning after distraction burglary

POLICE in Leamington are warning people to be aware of doorstep callers after cash was stolen in a distraction burglary.

In Clapham Square yesterday (Thursday) at about 2pm a man riding a bicycle approached an address and after knocking on the door asked for a drink of water, and then asked to use the toilet.

The householder obliged, but after the stranger had left the premises they found that a purse containing £90 was missing.

The stranger is described as white, approximately 30 years old, stubbly with dark hair and a cap.

He rode off in the direction of the canal tow path.

Officers are reminding people to always be aware of doorstep callers and to put the security chain on the door before opening it, even if you are expecting someone.

You do not have to let anyone into your home even if they claim it is an emergency.

If the person claims to be from an organisation ask to see photo identification and check with the company they claim to be from by using a telephone number from the directory – not the one of their card, as this could be answered by an accomplice.

Never let a stranger into your home if you feel they are not genuine.

Anyone with any information about the offender is asked to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
