The Warwick town cycling races have been cancelled.

Warwick Lanterne Rouge Cycling Club (WLRCC) were organising the event and made an announcement earlier this week.

The town races returned to the town last year after a nine year absence, which saw seven races, ranging from Elite Men and Women to novice racers - as well as a community ride.

The races were due to take place again this year on Sunday September 6, but because of the coronavirus pandemic the club decided to cancel the races.

Richard Poynter, WLRCC chairman, said "Unfortunately , the continued uncertainty regarding COVID-19 means that it has become impossible to continue planning for this years event.

"The health and safety of participants, spectators and volunteers comes before anything else.

"As much as we would love to go ahead with this years event, it just isn't viable at this time.

"We therefore have postponed the event until Sunday September 5 next year and we will look to bring it back bigger and better in 2021.

"The date coincides with the club's official fifth birthday so we will be looking forward to creating a party atmosphere in the centre of Warwick once again."
