An eight-year-old from Warwick will be taking on a 50-mile challenge to help raise money for the Myton Hospices.

Sam Clarke, who attends Newburgh Primary School, will be completing the challenge on his bike over the course of five days.

His challenge starts on May 6.

Lissy Clarke, Sam's mum said: "It will be a big challenge for him as the furthest he has ever ridden at one time is nine miles.

"Although a few of the miles will be done round the streets and lanes of Warwick, he will mainly ride up and down the down the drive so not to be out in public.

"Sam’s 50 mile ride is in aid of The Myton Hospices, who have cared for a few family friends in the last days of life, making such a huge difference to these loved ones.

"We also have a friend who is on staff in the hospice, so we know what a tough time this has been for them, both managing the illness and with so many fundraising events cancelled."

When asked about the inspiration behind the challenge Lissy said: "Every time we saw Captain (Colonel) Tom on the news, Sam would begin imagining the challenges he could do- saying he could run around the garden 200 times or ride his bike up and down the drive 300 times to help raise money as well.

"He was really keen to do something helpful at this difficult time.

"Since he was tiny, Sam has always been a generous person, the first to think of others and to share whatever he has. He also has loads of energy and determination, and we are really proud that he is putting it to good use at this time, as he is really missing all his friends and activities.

"Friends and family from America, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Mexico and South Africa have donated to the cause, as well, of course, as our lovely community right here in Warwick and Leamington."

Speaking about his challenge Sam said: “I’m feeling a bit nervous for my ride because it’s so many miles, and I really hope I can complete it.

"I’m feeling grateful for all the people who have donated, really grateful. I hope that the money will help the Myton Hospices.”

Sam initially hoped to raise £50, (50 miles/5 days/£50) but as of Monday, including gift aid, he has raised more than £700.

"Sam’s dad and I are just so proud of him for being so generous and so determined, and taking on such a big challenge", said Lissy.

"We are also really grateful for the way the community has already come around to support him with encouraging words and donations.

"What an amazing experience to have at eight years of age."
