Parents push for tongue-tie care

At present the hospital does not treat babies who have the condition, which can affect their feeding and result in poor weight gain, and parents have had to seek treatment either privately, through charities or at other hospitals.

But having listened to the views of parents and specialists, the hospital’s chief executive Glen Burley has said a service will be up and running by the summer.

This news has been welcomed by a support group made up of parents whose children were born with the condition, but members will continue to push to ensure the service meets the required standards.

Vicky Howatt, whose son Luke was born with tongue-tie, said: “We are asking them to start up a service which not only diagnoses the condition but also ensures that treatment is completed within a couple of days. This is imperative so the baby can feed properly.

“It’s easy for them to say they are starting something up but we want to make sure its’s a service that serves the community and that parents don’t have to travel miles or be placed on long NHS waiting lists.”
