The most unfair of all taxes

Your paper has asked “would we be prepared to end our freeze on council tax to help our huge debt crisis?”

Our council certainly is facing a debt crisis which needs their urgent attention, however, I would like to point out that “we” do not pay council tax.

In fact it is the most unfair of all taxes which must actually be paid by probably no more than one in ten of us and it takes little account of true income or ability to pay.

I am one of the many pensioners on a relatively low income who find that council tax is by far our largest single annual bill, yet many high earners are not liable to pay at all and other on benefits and an income significantly greater than my own have it paid for them.

I would like to suggest that if our council wants to know whether they should solve their problem by returning to the runaway inflation busting council tax rises of the recent past, they should ask the people who will actually have to pay for it.
