Parking should be a free commodity

Regarding the front page of the Courier last week (‘Ruthless’ firms may take parking’)

Erm, councils of England you are missing something I am sure.

If employing parking meters and parking attendants is costing too much to warrant it and the resulting parking fees councils charge to park do not cover the cost of machines and parking attendants, then surely the best option is to stop charging people to park their cars on public highways in town and council owned car parks?

And councils, save yourselves all the bother and money it costs to operate a parking business at all - a scheme that was only brought in to generate money that rips off residents and shoppers that generate local economy - rather than save just a bit of money by letting a private cooperate company make oodles of money out of the town while the shops close around them?

One never used to pay to park on the street in Warwick or Leamington.

Does no one up there in power have any logistical sense?

No parking charges means you don’t have to employ someone to walk and monitor streets, take photos, issue tickets and administer the fines? That’s where you save your money to meet budgets, just let parking be a free commodity to those that drive and already pay road tax for terrible potholed roads that wreck cars and massive fuel duty and insurance, rather than sell us off as a business to a private company.

If the money charged for public parking is not covering the expense of running a town council car park and public highway parking patrol, my first question is what on earth are you doing with the revenue from parking meters and fines? Whose kitty or pocket is it falling into?

I don’t believe it does not and cannot cover its own costs. It is expensive and there is never anywhere to park so looks like the parking business is doing well. So I ask again where’s the money going ?

Secondly it feels very shady letting a private company take over that area. Some more dodgy council deals perhaps?

Dear council, if it’s not underhand land sales to developers its dodgy deals with private parking companies. Whatever next? It’s absolute greed and really very thick - no surprises there dear council.! As usual you are truly and incompetently unbelievable. - Name and address supplied.
