It’s democracy in action

I always look forward to my Focus, the LibDems newsletter. I was particularly struck by the piece in the August edition ‘Labour & Tories cosy up together’.

After the recent county council elections, the Conservatives in Warwickshire remain the largest party although they have lost their overall majority.

Cllr Boad claims that the “Conservative and Labour felt happier doing a deal sharing out the jobs”. Perhaps Cllr Boad of many years experience on the county council, does not know how democracy works? No deal was struck, just good democracy and common sense.

As Labour are chairing all the committees, it will ensure that the executive is fully scrutinized and held to account. It will mean that every budget reduction can be challenged such as the severe cuts to children’s centres.

I agree with Cllr Boad that parties need to work together to deal with the tough times ahead. That does not necessarily mean going into a coalition with small parties such as the LibDems and the Greens. Or is Cllr Boad just doing the usual LibDem thing – playing party politics?
