Fountains could be crowning glory

Would it be too much to ask, through your newspaper, to start a campaign in this year’s celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics to give a celebratory lift to Royal Leamington Spa in restoring the two Crown fountains in Jephson Gardens lake.

I remember the image well of these two powerful statements during our Sunday afternoon walk in Jephson Gardens when we lived in Leamington from 1940-48.

I understand all the pipework still exists and the pump house still provides power for the existing, rather poor image, of today’s fountains (like little boys piddling in the wind) which seem to lack the maintenance and need adjustments and do give a poor display.

If only we could, for the people of Leamington and visitors, restore the image of these fountains which I can only remember from photos. I can now only see and remember this glorious display of Crown fountains from photos in the library.

Were they on display for Queen Victoria’s Jubilee? Wouldn’t it ne a fitting gesture to reinstate this glorious sight on Jephson Gardens on this year’s 2012 celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee year. - G W Malone, Astbury Close, Daventry.
