Awards about quality of life

In response to the letter about the Leamington Society Awards (‘It shouldn’t be all about looks’ Letters, last week) I would say the awards are very much about people as well as looks.

The appearance of the town has a huge impact on the quality of life of its residents. Certainly the society regretted the loss of the original building in Warwick Street which had been partially empty and under occupied for years, but the elegant, restrained replacement complementing the neighbouring period structure deserved praise and we were happy to give an award to Kangs Costcutters.

The best way to preserve our period buildings is to find an economically viable use for them and this has been achieved at the Old Library. The refurbishment of the exterior has lifted the street scene and the development provides much needed homes within the town instead of using greenfield sites.

There will always be controversy over these decisions, but the awards are an opportunity for the Society to encourage high standards of planning and architecture and improve the character of the town for the benefit of local residents.
