Olympics inspire new generation

GREAT Britain might not have won any medals in archery, but the Olympics led to unprecedented interest in the sport in Warwickshire.

More than 250 people attended an event held by Leamington Archery Society at Old Leamingtonians Rugby Club on Saturday, with many signing up for the society’s beginners courses starting next March.

Chairman Brian Tustin said: “It was amazing. We have never seen anything like it. If a film with archery in like Lord of the Rings comes out we have quite a few people but nothing like this.”

Olympian Naomi Folkard, who reached the last 32 in London and has just won a field gold in the Val d’Isere, is a lifelong member of the club, and Mr Tustin hopes that juniors inspired this summer might one day shoot for their country.
