Not just jam and Jerusalem - Warwickshire WI takes on 100 challenges

Skydiving, toboganning, cycling and climbing mountains are just some of the 100 challenges the ladies of the Norton Lindsay Women’s Institue (WI) have been doing this year.

As a contribution to national celebrations for the WI’s centenary, the village group took it upon themselves to, between them, complete 100 challenges, which also have included swimming the equivalent distance of the English Channel, catching, then cooking and eating a fish and extracting honey from a beehive.

Among those taking part is 67-year-old Linda Buckley, who has braved the terror of doing a skydive through which she raised £1,006 for the Teenage Cancer Trust, and 29-year-old Emily Sylvester, who lives in Hatton Park but joined the Norton Lindsay WI because her grandmother Kate Hughes, who lives in the village, and mother Anne Cooke encouraged her to join.

Emily has cycled 100 miles, gone to a beach, completed a 10k run, gone for a ride in a cable car, played a round of golf and played ten pin bowling as her contributions to the 100 challenges. She said: “The WI is not what people think it is. I have really enjoyed being a member.

“My mum came up with the idea of doing 100 challenges. So far, we have done 85 and we have until the end of the year to complete the remaining 15. Funnily enough, the one we are struggling with the most is to take part in ballroom dancing.

“It has been brilliant to see some of the older members doing things that even I would not be able to do.”
