New PHAB club needs volunteers

Heather Clarke, Midlands development officer for the PHAB (Physically Disabled and Able-Bodied) network of clubs, is trying to set up fortnightly sessions aimed specifically at 11 to 17 year olds - but first, she needs volunteers who are willing to offer their time and support.

She said: “I open PHAB clubs wherever there is a need across the region.

“There is one in Leamington for adults and one in Kenilworth for young adults, but we think we need one for teenagers where they can do outdoor activities.”

The Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs has agreed to provide PHAB with indoor and outdoor facilities at Westlea Road in Leamington, while the number and type of activities arranged will depend on the views and availability of those who get involved. Mrs Clarke said: “PHAB is a caring organisation which aims to get disabled people to socialise, gain confidence and get out and about. We organise discos, quizzes - anything to include disabled people and able-bodied people in the same activities on equal terms.”

Mrs Clarke will need a minimum of ten volunteers who are willing to commit to spending a few hours each fortnight on helping with the running of the club. No experience of working in care or with disabled people is required as Mrs Clarke will provide the necessary training.
