New options for bowls parking

Alternative locations for the parking of cars and caravans at annual National Bowls Championships at Victoria Park in Leamington are now being considered.

At a recent monthly update meeting between the Friends of Victoria Park - who have petitioned against the use of the park for parking - and Warwick District Council, representatives of the authority confirmed that plans to move caravan parking away from the park during the championships are likely to be made public soon.

Officers also presented the results of work on the review of car parking alternatives.

Details of 12 options have been collated and assessed against criteria including capacity during the school summer holidays , distance from the park’s bowling greens and site ownership.

Two options which have yet to be made public offer a strong possibility of being able to accommodate most, if not all, the extra traffic created by the championships - about 350 cars.

A spokesman for the friends group said: “We welcome the likely move of caravan parking and are encouraged by the detailed work in reviewing options to move cars away from Victoria Park.

“We trust that the council, which has not shied away from investing very heavily to facilitate Bowls England’s relocation, will recognise that short-term difficulties should not be allowed to obstruct the very justifiable longer-term aspirations of more than 1,500 park lovers.”
