More celebrations for Warwick’s 1,100th year at summer music festival

St Mary’s church will welcome musicians from abroad as well as local talents to perform a variety of music over ten days, including Renaissance, pop, spiritual, folk and cappella.

The festival’s artistic director Simon Ogdon said: “Audiences will experience wonderful performances celebrating 1,100 years of Warwick in the stunning setting of St Mary’s collegiate church. The festival features international musicians, local and young talent and combines free-entry lunchtime recitals with ticketed evening concerts.”

Highlights include Requiem, the final work by Renaissance master Victoria, sung by the Warwick-based musical ensemble Armonico Consort on June 20 at 8pm; the British husband-and-wife team Gough Duo playing works for violin and organ (June 23 at 7.30pm); the 2014 BBC Choir of the Year competition’s ‘Choir of the Day’ winners the Warwickshire County Boys’ Choir singing arrangements of pop, spiritual and folk songs (June 25 at 7.30pm); music for flute and string trio by Beethoven and Dvořák from the Metzger Ensemble (June 26 at 7.30pm) and a wide range of a cappella music performed by the choral scholars of King’s College, Cambridge, The King’s Men (June 27 at 9.15pm after a drinks reception at 8.30pm).

The final concert of the festival, supported by Warwick Town Council, highlights the town’s 1,100th anniversary with a programme of music including Bruckner, Monteverdi and JS Bach’s Cantata Wir danken dir Gott BWV 29, sung by the Choirs of St Mary’s Collegiate Church and joined by the Festival Consort (June 28 at 7.30pm).
