Martin will take on mountain for Myton Hospices

Father-of-one Martin Saul, 52, will be taking part in a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in aid of the Myton Hospices in September and is aiming to raise £5,895 as part of the challenge.

Mr Saul has already shown his support for the charity by taking part in its Santa Dash event in December, raising almost £250 in the process, and says his main motivation to do so is to help fund the care it provides to those with terminal illnesses including cancer, which has affected several of his friends and loved ones.

He said: “So many lives are touched by cancer every year. We all hope and pray that it is not our family that gets cancer with all the tests and treatments involved.

“Thankfully many go on to live full lives, but it is reassuring to know that there are organisations such as the Myton Hospices to offer help and reassurance to those who need it.”

The organised trip will take 11 days of which seven will be made up of trekking with qualified guides.

There is a minimum of £3,995 to be raised by each participant.

This figure is made up of the £2,050 cost of the trip with the remaining £1,945 going directly to the charity.

Mr Saul said: “I am paying the £2,050 out of my own money, I do not think it right to ask for donations for the full amount, knowing that half of it is to cover the cost of the trip. But I’m asking for help in raising the remaining £1,945 even though I realise that budgets are tight and it is a large amount of money. I would love to manage to get to £5,895 - that’s £1 for every metre that I will be climbing.
