Lost names remembered on Warwick War Memorial

The names of the six war dead from the town were added to the memorial in Church Street thanks to efforts by family tree researcher, Christine Shaw.

The newly added names of those who died in the First World War are Edward J Waters, Clarence CAAE Capers, Charles W Sweeney, Stephen Wright and William H Milson.

James EW Rance fought in both wars and was honoured with military medals. His name was the final to be added on Monday.

All thanks to Hatton Park resident Christine whose discovered the missing names when researching her great uncle, Clarence Capers who lived at 11 Coten End and was killed in the Battle of Passchendaele on October 26, 1917.

She said: “I began researching and saw my uncle’s name missing, it all went from there.

“It was quite a lot of work but I enjoy it and it is something which should be done.

“My family doesn’t know why the name was never added, but often if a body was not found, families hoped for the best so it was not done.

“My great uncle was killed on the same day as 43 from his battalion, it is very sad.”

Christine and Warwick Town Council worked with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and War Graves Commission to ensure the six names were eligible and add the bronze inscriptions. A public remembrance service will take place at the site on Sunday.
