Indian school funded by Leamington charity is set to expand

The late Hannah Griffiths left the sum of money to the Buwan Kothi International Trust (BKIT), which was set up by former Campion School pupil Gurpreet Singh Mundy (known as ‘Gilly’), who died suddenly aged 36 in 2007. The charity went on to build the Gilly Mundy Memorial Community School in the state of Haryana.

The money will enable the charity to build an extra eight rooms at the school, which will mean it will be able apply to the Central Board of Secondary Education in Delhi to become a senior secondary school.

Mota Singh, trustee of BKIT and father of Gilly Mundy, had been close friends with Hannah Griffiths. He said: “Hannah always took a great interest in the school and was a regular donor over the years.”

Mr Singh travelled to the school in Haryana last autumn to see its new solar panels, funded by the Alty family of Leamington, who provided £24,000 to the charity. The solar panels mean that the school now benefits from free electricity for most of the year.

Mr Singh said: “I thank each and every one of our supporters over the past seven years.

“I am very hopeful that we can raise another £60,000 to buy three new buses and build a multi-purpose assembly hall.”
